Literacy and Development Self Paced Module (24 March - 18 April 2003)

This course aims to prepare literacy workers for assignment in developing countries of the South by focussing on the development context, the socio-political questions, the institutional framework and the managerial functions of literacy work. The course does not focus on literacy acquisition techniques (approaches, materials, pedagogy), on planning, on reading theory, or on the specifics of formal/non-formal education. The course is based on the premise that literacy work has social implications and so the focus of this course will be on: literacy in development, literacy as education, literacy and human relations, literacy and the institutions involved, literacy/language and their social meaning. The course will take the form of reading and writing assignments followed by individual tutorials.
