David Morgan, M.A.

UK Campus Director

David comes from the UK. He has headed the UK Campus since the transfer of SIL training in Europe to the European Training Programme in 2001. He holds an M.A. in Modern Languages from the University of Cambridge and an M.A. in Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He has field experience in Central Africa.

 

Professor Howard Jackson, Ph.D.

Academic Dean

Howard comes from the UK. He is Professor Emeritus at Birmingham City University. His Ph.D. is from the University of Reading in Linguistics. His first degree was in Modern Languages at King's College London. At the UK Campus of ETP, he currently teaches Grammar and Discourse Studies.

 

Ian Cheffy, Ph.D.

Senior Tutor and Literacy Co-ordinator

Ian comes from the UK. He has recently been awarded a Ph.D. at the University of Lancaster in Adult Education in Africa. His first degree is an M.A. in History and French at the University of Oxford. He has many years' experience of teaching at ETP and he is also a Senior Literacy Consultant with SIL International. His field experience is in Cameroon.

 

Leon Beachy, M.A.

Anthropology Co-ordinator

Leon comes from an Amish community in the United States. He teaches Anthropology on the Assignment Related Training course. He holds an M.A. in Translation Studies from Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology and an M.St. in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford. Leon's field experience is in Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

 

Madeleine van den Bovenkamp, M.A.

Head of Grammar

Madeleine comes from the Netherlands. She teaches Grammar on the ART course. She has an M.A. in Linguistics from the Free University of Amsterdam. She also holds a B.A. in Dutch language and literature and academic teaching qualifications from Rijks Universiteit, Groningen. Her field experience is as a translator of European languages and Hebrew.

 

Françoise Carénas, Ph.D.

Sociolinguistics Co-ordinator

Françoise comes from France. She teaches Sociolinguistics and related subjects on several courses. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Reading in the UK. Her first degree is an M.A. in Organisation, Planning and Management in Education, also from Reading. She has teaching experience in Denmark, Switzerland, South Korea and France as well as the UK. Her field experience is in Togo, West Africa.

 

Jennifer (Niffer) Davey, M.A.

Language Learning Tutor

Niffer comes from Northern Ireland. She teaches Language Learning on the LACA course. She has a B.A. from Durham University as well as an M.A. from Queen's University, Belfast, both degrees in Theology. For nine months of the year, she is based in Nigeria, where she has served since 2003.

 

Barrie Evans, Ph.D.

Meaning & Communication course leader

Barrie comes from the UK. He teaches Semantics and Pragmatics on the Meaning and Communication course. He holds a Ph.D. from University College London in Semantics. Barrie has wide field experience, particularly in West Africa.

 

Lesley Fast, M.A.

Meaning & Communication and Translation Studies Tutor

Lesley comes from Canada. He has field experience in Papua New Guinea as translation project manager and tutor in translation training programmes. He holds an M.A. in Biblical studies from McGill University and is currently in a Ph.D. programme at the Free University of Amsterdam. He teaches on the Meaning and Communication course and the Translation course. He also serves as translation consultant with SIL in Eurasia Area.

 

Heather Ford, Dip. Theol.

Pastoral Tutor

Heather comes from the UK. She teaches Teamwork and Practical Spirituality and serves as the Campus Pastoral Tutor. She holds a Diploma in Applied Theology from Redcliffe College and is also a trained nurse. Her field experience is in Papua New Guinea.

 

Barbara Graham, Ph.D.

Multilingual Education Tutor

Barbara is from the UK. After working extensively in primary and adult education in the UK, she studied for an M.A. in Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck College, London and became an Advisory Teacher. Since 2001 she has served in Kenya with SIL as a Multilingual Education consultant. She recently gained a Ph.D. from the University of Reading for her research into multilingual education in Kenya. She teaches Literacy and Multilingual Education.

 

Richard Gravina, Ph.D. cand.

Lexicography Tutor and Translation Studies Coordinator

Richard is from the UK. He has an M.A. in Mathematics from Cambridge University as well as an M.A. in Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He is currently a Ph.D. student at Leiden University while also serving as a part-time linguistics consultant with SIL Cameroon, where he has taught a number of linguistics workshops and has extensive field experience.

 

Paul Lawrence, Ph.D.

Biblical Hebrew for Beginners course leader

Paul comes from the UK. He is a graduate in Akkadian and Hebrew from the University of Liverpool. He has taught Hebrew in evening classes in Liverpool and to Bible Translators in West and Central Asia. He is the author of the Lion Atlas of Bible History and co-author with Professor Kenneth Kitchen of Treaty, Law and Covenant in the Ancient Near East. His most recent work, The Books of Moses Revisited, which explores issues of authorhip of the Penateuch, was publihsed in 2011.

 

Nick Lunn, Ph.D.

Biblical Hebrew Beyond Basics course leader

Nick comes from the UK. He teaches the Biblical Hebrew Beyond Basics course. He holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Brunel University / London School of Theology. Nick's field experience is in Kenya, East Africa.

 

Johannes Merz, Ph.D. (cand)

Anthropology Tutor

Johannes comes from Switzerland. He holds an MA in African Studies from Leiden University in the Netherlands. He is currently finishing PhD research in Anthropology at the same university. He has extensive field experience in Togo and Benin in West Africa, where he also serves as an anthropology consultant with SIL International.

 

Sharon Merz, B.Ed.

Anthropology Tutor

Sharon comes from the UK. She has a B.Ed. in Geography from Birmingham University. She went to Ghana with SIL initially for three years, but it was in this time that her interest in Anthropology took root. She has now gained extensive field experience in Benin and Togo in West Africa and is currently studying for an MA in Anthropology with Trinity Saint David, University of Wales.

 

Sharon Morgan, B.A.

Phonology Tutor

Sharon comes from the United States. She teaches Phonology on several courses. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Washington in Seattle. She has field experience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

 

Mary Morgan, Ph.D.

Linguistics for Literacy Tutor

Mary comes from the East Coast of the USA. Her first degree was a BA in Spanish which she gained from the University of North Carolina. Her Ph.D. studies in Sociolinguistics were completed at Georgetown University. She has extensive field experience, as she has both taught and practiced literacy field work as well as served as a consultant in the Americas, Eastern, Central and Southern Africa, the South Pacific and South Asia. She is the module leader for the new Lingustics for Literacy course to be launched in 2011.

 

Gerdy Oldham

Assistant Teacher

Gerdy is from the Netherlands. She has been involved in the Teamwork and Living In Christ components of the Assignment Related Training course and has also taught the Learning that Lasts course. She is a qualified Primary School Teacher. She has served in Marseille as a language intern.

 

Carol Orwig, M.A.

Language and Culture Acquisition course leader

Carol comes from the United States. She teaches Language Acquisition on the LACA course. She holds an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas in Arlington, and a B.A. in Ancient Languages from the William and Mary College, Virginia. Carol has field experience in Mexico, Cameroon and many other places around the world. She is also an SIL International Language Learning Consultant.

 

Julia Pike, M.Sc.

Language Project Planning and Implementation course leader

Julia grew up in Kenya and is a UK national. She holds an M.Sc. in Development Management from the Open University and an M.Sc. in Operational Research from the University of Hull. She has field experience in the Solomon Islands and also has teaching experience in both Russia and India.

 

Kathrin Pope, B.Ed.

Language Learning Advisor & Tutor

Kathrin comes from Switzerland. She has a B.Ed. from the University of Basel. She spent several years teaching in a secondary school in Switzerland. After this she spent 10 years with SIL in Benin (West Africa) working in a translation project. She heads up the language learning course in Germany and leads a distance course for those requiring assistance with language learning in remote situations. This course may be taken in French, English or German. She is now based, with her family, in England.

 

John Roberts, Ph.D.

Linguistics Consultant

John comes from the UK. He holds a Ph.D. from University College, London as well as a Dip. Ling. from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He has teaching experience in Europe, Asia and the USA and has written many linguistic articles and books. His most recent book is A Study of Persian Discourse Structure. He currently serves as a linguistics consultant with SIL International and is an MA Field Linguistics dissertation supervisor for ETP.

 

Heather Saunders, M.A.

Phonetics Tutor

Heather comes from Northern Ireland. She teaches Phonetics on the LACA course and holds a first degree in Modern Languages from Trinity College, Dublin and an M.A. in English Language Teaching (ESOL) from Queen's University, Belfast. Her field experience is in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa.

 

Hannu Sorsamo, M.Sc.

Head of Phonetics

Hannu is from Finland. He has taught Phonetics on the LACA course since 2003. He holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science and Applied Linguistics from the University of Helsinki. His field experience has been in both West Africa and West Asia.

 

Hazel Sorsamo. M.A.

Language Learning Tutor

Hazel comes originally from Scotland, but she also speaks fluent Finnish. She teaches Language Learning on the LACA course. She holds an M.A. in Interpreting and Translation from Heriot Watt University in Scotland and has field experience in Northwest Province of Cameroon, West Africa as well as in West Asia.

 

Jim Smith, M.A.

Multilingual Education Tutor

Jim is originally from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. After a career in electronic engineering and computers, working in England and the USA, Jim studied postgraduate courses in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics before going to South East Asia. His M.A. in Applied Linguistics is from the Northern Territories University in Australia. He gained wide field experience in Malaysia. He has also taught literacy courses at Asia SIL and has served in several countries in Asia as a Literacy and Multilingual Education Consultant with SIL Asia Area. He also serves as a Senior Literacy and Education consultant with SIL International.

 

Karla Smith, Ph.D.

Mulitilingual Education Tutor

Karla is originally from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. She holds an M.A. in Education: Learning Disabilities from the University of South Florida and a Ph.D. in Education and Sociolinguistics from Charles Darwin University in Australia. She has extensive experience in teaching, ranging from pre-school to university, including teaching at Asia SIL. She currently serves as a Literacy and Multilingual Education Consultant with SIL Asia Area and has field experience in countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. She also serves as a Senior Literacy and Education consultant with SIL International.

 

Peter Tate, M.A.

Learning that LASTS workshop leader

Peter comes from Northern Ireland. He holds an M.A. in Theology and a B.A. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Queen's University, Belfast, as well as a Certificate in Further Education Teaching with City & Guilds. He serves as the leader of the Learning that LASTS workshop and advises on educational methodology. He also teaches software applications. He has field and teaching experience in Ghana and Tanzania.

 

Julie Taylor, Ph.D.

EthnoArts course leader

Julie was born in Singapore and brought up in the Middle East and New Zealand. After an extensive career as a concert violinist, she gained an M.A. in Cross-cultural Communication and Ethnomusicology at Wheaton and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Edinburgh University. She is the Anthropology and EthnoArts co-ordinator for SIL's Africa Area and an SIL International Ethnomusicology and Arts consultant. She was on the music faculty of Daystar University (Nairobi) for five years. She has extensive experience in Africa, as well as research experience in Papua New Guinea.

 

Ruth Weston, B.Lib., M.C.L.I.P

Head Librarian

Ruth, from the UK, holds a B.Lib. from the University of Aberystwyth, Wales. She has oversight of ETP's academic library which currently has over 8,000 titles in addition to a good range of technical journals and reference books.

 

Catherine Young, Ph.D

Multilingual Education course leader

Catherine is from the UK. She currently serves as a Literacy and Multilingual Education Coordinator with SIL Asia Area. Catherine has recently obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Bangor in Wales. Her research focused on policy development for appropriate education strategies for children from multilingual communities in Asia. She has taught in training programmes in the Philippines, Korea, Bangladesh and the UK. Catherine is involved in consulting in multilingual education with UNESCO, UNDP and Save the Children-UK.

 

Madeleine Thalmann, B.A.

Madeleine Thalmann vient de Suisse. Ella a un diplôme en pédagogie. Elle a travaillé dans un projet d’alphabétisation pendant 14 ans en Côte d’Ivoire en Afrique de l’ouest. De retour en Suisse, elle a enseigné plusieurs fois l’alphabétisation dans des cours ETP en France et en Allemagne.

 

Kathrin Pope, B.Ed.

Kathrin Pope vient de Suisse. Elle a un diplôme de professeur des écoles secondaires pour les mathématiques, la biologie et la géographie. Après quelques années d'enseignement en Suisse, elle est partie au Bénin en Afrique de l'ouest, où elle a participé à un projet de traduction pendant 10 ans. Elle a enseigné l'apprentissage de langue de nombreuses fois en Allemagne, ainsi qu'au Togo et en Suisse francophone. Depuis 2003 elle habite avec sa famille en Angleterre.
