- Literacy and Development Self Paced Module (24 March - 18 April
2003)

- This course aims to prepare literacy workers for assignment in developing
countries of the South by focussing on the development context, the
socio-political questions, the institutional framework and the managerial
functions of literacy work. The course does not focus on literacy acquisition
techniques (approaches, materials, pedagogy), on planning, on reading
theory, or on the specifics of formal/non-formal education. The course
is based on the premise that literacy work has social implications and
so the focus of this course will be on: literacy in development, literacy
as education, literacy and human relations, literacy and the institutions
involved, literacy/language and their social meaning. The course will
take the form of reading and writing assignments followed by individual
tutorials.
